چکیده

decision to give further narcotics the drugs may well be given too late to have any effect on the mother, although if given slightly earlier, and if delivery does occur within the next one to two hours, the baby may be affected and the start of his respiration impaired. For patients who are progressing rapidly in labour after induction and who can be expected to deliver within two to three hours from the time of induction a totally satisfactory form of analgesia does not appear to be available. The use of a relatively new form of analgesia, transcutaneous nerve stimulation,x may be of value in this situation, and we are currently evaluating this method. It is interesting to note that six patients in the two-to-six hour group received no analgesia other than premedication and considered this quite adequate.

Lagging Behind – The Emerging Influence of Jet Lag Symptoms on Road Safety

Road traffic accidents are the leading cause of death in international travelers. With the growth of international travel, the number of visitors who rent a vehicle upon arrival at their destination by air or by sea is expected to increase. Jet lag is a well-recognized maladaptation to international travel across multiple time zones. Little is known about the possible influence of jet lag sympt...

Mice genetically deficient in vasopressin V1a and V1b receptors are resistant to jet lag.

Jet-lag symptoms arise from temporal misalignment between the internal circadian clock and external solar time. We found that circadian rhythms of behavior (locomotor activity), clock gene expression, and body temperature immediately reentrained to phase-shifted light-dark cycles in mice lacking vasopressin receptors V1a and V1b (V1a(-/-)V1b(-/-)). Nevertheless, the behavior of V1a(-/-)V1b(-/-)...

Further assessments of the relationship between jet lag and some of its symptoms.

The disruption of circadian rhythms following time-zone transitions gives rise to the syndrome of jet lag. The power of some of the symptoms of jet lag to predict the amount of jet lag measured at the same and at different times of the day has been investigated. Eleven healthy subjects were studied in an Isolation Unit for two days after a simulated flight from the UK to Beijing (8 time zones t...

Alleviation of jet lag by melatonin: preliminary results of controlled double blind trial.

Alleviation of jet lag by melatonin: preliminary results of controlled double blind trial Jet lag is an ill defined phenomenon resulting from rapid flight across several time zones.' It is considered to be due to desynchronisation of circadian rhythms, such as the sleep-wake cycle, with local time and to lack of sleep. ' A means of rapidly resynchronising body rhythms to local time would benefi...
